In 1969, two pretty girls graduated from college and set out on an improbable journey they drove from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Santiago, Chile to get to a New Year’s Party. They travelled along 12,000 miles of roads and were three months late. Along the way, they met dictators and revolutionaries, generals and peasants. What began as pure adventure gradually became a voyage of love, danger and self-exploration that challenged everything Hope Boylston thought she knew about the world. Boylston experienced one of the grand social experiments of the last century. Allende was the only freely elected socialist government South America has ever had. Although Boylston’s stories are mostly very personal, the events that surrounded them were momentous. Salvador Allende’s three-year “peaceful” revolution was followed by General Pinochet’s 17 year dictatorship. Her essays record these extraordinary experiences with passion, humor and a fine sense of the absurd.

Hope Boylston presents a fascinating story of her travels to South America and especially Chile. While there she establishes close friendships and becomes politically active during the Allende regime and after the Pinochet-led military coup, which was supported by the US government. She then joined the resistance, which leads to some anxious experiences she recounts. But her tale is much more than political. It is a very human story of close relationships and passions. I wanted to meet many of the characters she describes and had trouble putting the book down. A remarkable work indeed.

Hay Locos Hope Boylston 9780982971635 Books Reviews

I'll keep this short and to the point. Writing sub-par. Themes poorly developed. Subject matter intensely boring. Like most of the 60's radicals, the author is deep in the throes of self-admiration, the chief reason being her doctrinaire commitment to leftism, this despite the mass graves it tends to leave behind. Ironically, she's very quick to note the killings committed by the Pinochet regime. So you see, gentle reader, it isn't murder if a leftist pulls the trigger, ties the noose, or mixes the gas. A round of applause for Ms. Boylston, whose leftism makes her a better, more interesting person than you.
Boylston has written a memoir that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Her personal experiences as a young American woman in Chile are interwoven with that country's turbulent events from the excitement of Allende to the terror of Pinochet. She is a great story-teller; narrating people and events, both great and small, with humor, warmth and insight.
I read this book every morning on my commute and I never wanted to put it down! Hope Boylston describes what started out as a pan-american adventure and ended up as a life-changing journey culminating in her involvement in the resistance movement against the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. She reflects on this historical moment and its repercussions and gives an insider's view that is at once critical and easily digestible for an American readership. Bravo!
Hope Boylston has written a personal and political memoir of her travels through Latin America until she arrived in Chile, and her engagement with the political process in Chile from the exciting and hopeful times of the Allende government through a period in the dictatorship that followed. She has a humorous and self-aware voice, and balances funny reflections on the ridiculous and absurd with more serious thoughts on the dilemmas of her status as a privileged outsider and her engagement with the Chilean political process. The memoir has been highly enjoyable reading both for me (in my 60s and also familiar with Chile during Allende) and for my 22-year-old daughter, which says alot about the book's ability to appeal to a wide audience.
‘Hay Locos’ is a poignantly reminiscent book that allows us to experience Allende and post-Allende Chilie through the eyes of an independent female traveler who decides to reside in Chile. The book benefits from the years of wisdom and contemplation that occurred between its retellings. In this sense, the pain and hardships that were freshly abound are delivered to us now with remarkable tranquility, sadness and humor. Boylston’s tender and insightful narratives give us a real sense of how such experiences and memories have created resilient people who do what is needed to keep their own lives and the lives of those they care for together.
